While the American League Cy Young Award will not be handed out until November 12, the MLB players have spoken — and they feel Felix Hernandez, not Corey Kluber, was the AL’s most outstanding pitcher in 2014.
On Monday, Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners received the MLB Players Choice AL Outstanding Pitcher Award, beating out Kluber of the Cleveland Indians and Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox.
Hernandez earned the honor by finishing this season with a 15-6 record and a career-best 2.14 ERA.
Despite not landing the award, Kluber separated himself as one of the best pitchers in the American League this season, going 18-9 with a superb 2.44 ERA in 235 2/3 innings pitched in 2014.
The right-hander paced baseball in WAR (7.3) and finished second in fielding independent pitching (2.35). He finished two strikeouts behind David Price of the Detroit Tigers for the MLB lead in punchouts (269).
